Cryotherapy, the treatment that plunges you to minus 196 degrees
A procedure that involves standing in a chamber or booth for 3 minutes, producing a fight-or-flight response in the body, and a huge rush of endorphins. This “cool” trend is beloved by athletes and celebrities alike. First developed in Japan, the therapy arrived in Europe in the 80s. In Poland, it is used to treat many conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, sleep disorders and depression. Vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to the extremities, which reduces inflammation around soft-tissue injuries, stopping them progressing. The release of adrenalin relieves pain and generates the feelings of exhilaration that players report.
The range of benefits includes:
- Improvement of muscle recovery
- Pain relief
- Improvement of skin condition
- Weight loss by boosting the body’s metabolic rate
- Improvement of sleep
- Reduction of injuries
- Increase in energy
Exercise: before or after cryotherapy?
Yes! It is safe either way. If you exercise before cryotherapy, you will experience increased energy and greater recovery due to reduction of inflammation. If you exercise afterwards, you will experience a higher pain tolerance and more energy.
Will I be able to stand the cold?
There is no actual freezing. Only the feeling of being cold. Whole body cryotherapy is simply very cold air flowing over the surface of the skin. The air is completely dry and safe.
